What Is A Brand And Why Do You Need One?

Eventually, all realtors will ask the age-old question “Should I brand myself?” and the very simple answer is – YES!

Branding yourself is not only important for your ego, your business, but your customers. Branding yourself is going to help you be remembered, stand out from the crowd and grow your social media presence.

“Branding is hard!” “I already have a brand .. my brand is John_Doe.Brokerage” I’ve heard it all. First off, branding isn’t hard once you nail who you are. Once you have identified your brand, the rest is just maintenance. And as for “John_Doe.Brokerage” that is not a brand. That is your first and last name attached to the brokerage you work for. It is not unique. You don’t stand out and there is no personality behind it.

Imagine this. You walk into fashion week, check in and head to your front row seat. You are slated to sit beside a style icon, and once you get to your seat your name isn’t on your chair. Panic slightly sets in, but then you realize that your name isn’t on your seat because you’ve been recognized as your brand. That’s what happened this October to me at Toronto Men’s Fashion Week. Or the other night at a celebration by one of the largest builders in the GTA. I walked into the venue and as heads turned I heard whisperings “That’s James In The City” That is when I knew my brand had the respect it deserved.

What Is Branding?

Branding goes way beyond just a logo or graphic element. When you think about your brand, you really want to think about your entire customer experience … everything from your logo, your website, your social media experiences, the way you answer the phone, the colour lipstick you wear, to the way your customers experience your team.

When you look at this broad definition of branding, it can be a bit overwhelming to think about what is involved in your brand.

Your brand is the way your clients perceive you. It is critical to be aware of the experience your brand is having on the public, especially in the service sector where your name and reputation is everything.

Why Do You Need A Brand?

A memorable logo is important, yes. It paves the way for effective branding. However, a brand is more than just a logo. A brand is the emotion behind what the public sees and feels when they interact with your company on any level. Your brand is the image behind what your business believes and strives to accomplish.

Your brand is the identity and personality of your business and it set’s you apart from your competitors. It is what people think when they think of your company.

Defining your brand will not only help tailor what you offer to your clients and the public, it can also help guide the strategic decisions you will make for your business.

A strong brand will drastically stand out from its competitors. They focus on a single functional benefit of the service they are offering and make it stand out. These strong brands know what their clients want and deliver that message. They connect with their clients on an emotional level, as an emotional connection will breed brand loyalty, referrals and growth!
